The Mighty Mail-Order Protein Blend Review: MyProtein vs Bulkpowders

This article is going to compare the protein blends from the two biggest online protein brands; MyProtein and Bulkpowders.

Proteins are the basis of many of our body functions. All our cells contain protein, especially muscle fibers. Proteins are responsible for carrying messages around our bodies in the form of hormones and also the key player in our immune systems that fight off disease.

Not enough protein in your diet causes you to feel run down; you’re more likley to end up with coughs and colds and other infections. If your diet is low in protein for a long time your body tries to find it elsewhere and ends up using protein from your muscles themselves. So you end up slowly getting weaker over time.

Fitness enthusiasts need a more protein than others. When you are exercising regularly (e.g. weightlifting or running), and not getting enough protein, you will also find yourself recovering very slowly. Instead of slowly building yourself up with your exercise, you can be slowly beating yourself up.

Everyone needs protein. It is an absolutely crucial component of your diet. While some people may try low carb or low fat diets and find results; a low protein diet is simply dangerous.

How Much Protein Do I Need?

About 10-30% of your diet should be made of protein.

This could even be as high as 50% for intense bodybuilders and weightlifters.

A common rule of thumb for people looking to build muscle is to eat 1.5-2g of protein for every pound you weigh. Some research has suggested that you will still get similar results at 1g for every pound. It just goes to show that everyone is different. You need to experiment a little and find what works best for you.

Where Can I Find Protein?

Protein is found in food from both animal orgin and also a lot of plant based foods. Most foods contain some form of protein but in order to get enough in your diet we often need to select a more protein rich food to pair with each meal.

Animal proteins include red meat, fish and poultry. Plant proteins include legumes such as beans, peas and lentils.

It is a good idea to include at least one good source of protein with each meal if you exercise or work a physical job. Such as a large chicken breast or a couple of handfuls of legumes.

How Can I Know I'm Getting Enough?

Diet tracking apps such as MyFitnessPal make it easy to know if you are getting the right amount each macronutrient, not just protein.

The Right Amount Depends On You

People who require a lot of protein, such as weightlifters and bodybuilders, will still struggle to get enough protein in their diet despite already including lots of protein rich foods.

This is where supplementation makes it far easier and even cheaper to get enough.

Now it is important to realise that this is supplementation, not meal replacement. This is protein in addition to what you are already eating to make up the right amount.

The right amount depends on you. It matches your needs.

Supplementing

Protein supplements have become so popular that they are commonly found on supermarket shelves.

How do you know which protein supplement is best? There are so many to choose from.

There are so many brands. There are so many different types of protein products be it whey, a vegan source, or even beef protein.

It is widely recommended that you should get your protein from multiple sources. This is why a protein blend is the ideal protein supplement.

Different proteins are made of different amino acids. Some more vital than others. Your body absorbs different proteins at different rates.

By choosing more varied proteins, your body can make much more effective use out of them and experience a wider range of benefits.

What We're Looking At

The two biggest and best online protein brands are MyProtein and Bulkpowders. This review is going to compare MyProtein’s Total Protein Blend and Bulkpowders’s Complete Protein Blend.

They will be reviewed on taste, texture, mixability, and the blend content itself.

To review these protein blends, a bag of strawberry of both brands was ordered. One scoop was mixed with 200ml of water in a classic Mixmaster protein shaker.P

Suitable for vegeterians. Gluten free.

On the first sip, this protein tastes very sweet. Initially it is almost too sweet. Stick with it, on sip three its pretty good.

There is certainly a good consistency to this blend. It could be a bit thicker. Maybe that’s just preference.

This blend takes a good bit of shaking. It does eventually smooth out after a good ten seconds of shaking. Don’t just give it a little shake or you might be munching lumps.

MyProtein don’t specify the ratio of proteins in this blend. We do know that there are seven forms. These seven forms are from eggs, milk, and whey (which is also from milk).

These seven proteins are: Whey (concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysed), milk protein (Concentrate, Micellar Casein, Calcium-Caseinate), and egg white powder.

Suitable for vegeterians.

The taste is not at all overpowering. Quite mild and pleasant. A lovely underlying gentle creamy taste to each

There are small lumps of the flavouring in the powder. This is not at all an issue because they seem to dissolve and break up well. It might be contributing to some variability in the taste depending on how many you get in your scoop.

This is a very creamy blend. Thick. Satisfying.

This blend mixes extremely easily. There was never a case of lumps forming.

Bulkpowders say that this blend is in a ratio of 50/35/15 of whey, milk, and egg proteins. These proteins come in four forms: whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, egg white powder, glutamine peptides (Gluten).

Wrapping Up

So overall, the Bulkpowders protein mixed up much easier to a very satisfying consistency. The MyProtein powder mixed up well too, but the Bulkpowders protein blend was the clear winner in the mixability and texture categories.

In regards to taste, this is certainly a very subjective aspect. If you have a sweet tooth, then the MyProtein blend is for you. If you want a safe tasty choice then the Bulkpowders protein is for you.

In terms of content, they are both very similar. The Myprotein blend only just takes the lead here due to the slightly more varied protein forms.

There is not a wrong choice between either. They are both top quality protein blends.

I do have a clear favorite and it is the Bulkpowders Complete Protein Blend.
